Stunning Santorum Quote Shows Depth of Trump’s Destruction of America’s Trust

On Wednesday night, former United States Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN. While some of his political opinions, especially on social issues like abortion and same sex marriage, may be extreme, it is important to note that Santorum was the runner-up to Mitt Romney in the 2012 Republican presidential primary. He is hardly and outlier in the party.

The discussion among the panelists was, of course, Michael Cohen’s testimony earlier Wednesday which he opened with calling Donald Trump a lair, a racist, and a con man.

Unlike the Republicans on the House Government Oversight Committee, and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, and even Trump himself, Santorum chose not to combat Cohen’s testimony by painting him as a habitual liar whose word is worthless.

Nope, instead Santorum chose to defend the President of the United States against a slew of false statements (some, potentially, submitted under oath) with the most damning defense of this president anyone has yet offered.

“The President does not tell the truth about a lot of things, fairly consistently. The fact that he is not telling the truth about Russia fairly consistently, at least in the eyes of people around here, why is that any different? I mean, it’s not like he’s doing something out of character with the Russia investigation that he’s not doing in other areas. So, you make the point that he lies about Russia all the time, well, according to what I hear on this roundtable and this network, he lies about everything all the time, so what’s the difference?”

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Yes, a former United States Senator and someone who may well have secured the 2012 Republican nomination if Newt Gingrich had not refused to drop out of the race and kept splitting the far-right vote, went on television and defended the President of the United States against accusations of perjury, suborning perjury, obstruction of justice, and perhaps witness tampering by excusing the behaviors as just Trump being Trump.

This is how far America has fallen?

This is how deep the cancer within the Republican Party has spread?

And to be clear, it is not just the Republican Party. It is EVERYTHING affiliated with the Republican Party. It is the NRA. It is the religious right like Jerry Fallwell, Jr. and Pat Robertson. It is the legions of disgusting boosters like Sheldon Adelson buying awards and deciding foreign policy. It is the scourge of pundits like Alex Jones and Sean Hannity who repeat Trump’s lies as fact while spreading conspiracy theories of their own.

Earlier this week, House Republicans largely stood silent while House Democrats sought to stop the enactment of President Trump’s emergency declaration. Only 13 Republicans had the courage to do the right thing. Had this emergency declaration happened a decade earlier, say if President Barack Obama had assumed office and almost immediately declared guns a national emergency, Republicans would have not only lined-up to vote against a president seizing such power, the Republicans likely would have moved to file articles of impeachment immediately.

Now, they stand silently in fear of Trump while the Constitution is reduced to ashes?

Or, they go on television and defend Trump’s lies as irrelevant?

At this point, voting for ANY Republican candidate in 2020 makes one an enabler of treason.

I am sure Rick Santorum will be happy to offer a public defense of that too.
